Men in Nursing-- a Growing Trend
Did you know there are nearly 170,000 male nurses in the US? Nationally, males account for approximately 10% of BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) students, a percentage expected to increase as the nursing shortage persists. More and more men are choosing a career in nursing for the same valid reasons as their female counterparts: it is a challenging, rewarding occupation with great job security, excellent wages and limitless career pathways. A nursing degree can lead to other unique, well compensated roles such as the nurse-anesthetist, researcher, clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner. With over fifty different specialties and diverse advanced role opportunities, the sky is the limit. Moreover, there is an active push within nursing leadership to diminish stereotypes and provide better gender balance in the profession. Whether male or female, individuals with a passion for meaningful work and an aptitude for science and math can look forward to exciting career prospects in registered nursing.
