A college education to earn an Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing at a state-supported or private college or university is a large financial investment. It helps to investigate all financial aid resources to supplement what the student and his/her family is expected to pay.
Financial Aid Application
Step 1 Apply early to chosen college or university for admission
Step 2 Complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). Each state has a different FAFSA deadline
- Apply every year, even if you think you do not qualify for financial aid
- FAFSA is required for the Pell Grant, Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan, and work-study
- All state and many school student assistance programs require FAFSA
- The form must be filed after January 1st and before each state’s individual FAFSA deadline. In Indiana, the FAFSA application must be submitted by March 10th
- File the FAFSA form on-line at www.fafsa.org, or obtain an application from your high school counselor, college financial aid office, local library or by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID
- The FAFSA website contains instructions, helpful information and links to other financial services
Step 3 Review the Student Aid Report.
- After filing the FAFSA, you should receive the Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes information from the application and indicates Expected Family Contribution (EFC.) The EFC is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance (COA) to arrive at the Financial Need figure. Financial aid need = COA – EFC. Review these figures carefully. For more information or questions, contact:
- The Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 and ask for a free copy of The Student Guide: Financial Aid from the US Department of Education
- www.fafsa.org
- Federal Student Aid Information Center, PO Box 84, Washington D.C., 20044
Step 4 Private colleges and universities may require supplemental forms, including the College Scholarship Service (CCS) Profile
- The CSS Profile is to determine eligibility for non-government financial aid
- If required, complete the CSS Profile on-line at profileonline.collegeboard.com
Types of Financial Aid
Scholarships are gifts that do not require repayment. Specific criteria are designated to meet the requirements of the scholarships. Examples include academic performance, special qualifications, or interests in a particular field of study. Many databases of scholarships are on the Web. For more information, visit: fastweb.com
Loans are borrowed monies that must be repaid. There are three types of loans: student (Stafford or Perkins,) parent (PLUS loans,) or private. For more information, visit: fafsa.org
Grants are based on financial need, and do not require repayment. For more information, visit: fafsa.org
Student Employment includes work-study programs and part-time jobs. Nursing students may be eligible for employment as a student nurse after one semester of clinical nursing experience. Salaries range from $10.00-12.00 per hour.
Tuition Reimbursement is often available to employees of health care agencies and other work settings as an employee benefit. Criteria vary; examples include length of employment, a minimum number of working hours per pay period, and commitment to work following the college education. Employment as a student nurse does not usually qualify for this benefit.
